Enhancing in-car user experience with Virtual Device Architecture, Using Non-Proprietary and Open Standards - Tomasz Fidecki, brightONE
Virtual Device Architecture is a software solution aimed at connecting the world of things in car, distributing computing power and virtualizing features. It’s a seamless integration of ubiquitous smart devices to satisfy the demands of the “Always-On Generation”.

This architectural concept is an answer for turning customer pain (system complexity, costs, long development cycles, significantly-different smartphone roadmaps) into customer gain (keeping pace with progress in consumer electronics; seamless integration and ubiquitous access to data; creating a unique user experience & satisfaction).

The Virtual Device concept is designed using non-proprietary and open standards. It develops the idea of wise computing power distribution and utilizes the best features from on in the other. The proof of concept was released on Linux based TIZEN IVI software platform. This will be presented.

Radio Choices in the Car - Phil Stuchfield, Jaguar
The dynamic environment, of the car, offers a growing choice to the customer - especially for Radio. There is now more choice than ever before and the means to get a live stream has grown too. It's often possible to listen to the same station at the same time by selecting FM, DAB, TV and the Internet, however, it's not always a level playing field.

Broadcast types have different challenges in the car and the best quality isn't always the best option!
This talk will create typical scenarios, which area available to the customer and develop solutions or ideas on how this could be dynamic or require interaction.

The ability to create software solutions to the complex task offer huge benefits, but the wider picture needs to understood and embraced.

The Mobile Conduit: Delivery of Advanced Automotive Services through the Phone - Jacek Serafinski, Zylia Sp. z o.o.
The Connected Car is set to revolutionize the automotive experience over the next decade. The system architectures that will make this possible are very unclear right now - the tension between the auto manufacturers and the phone manufacturers is almost palpable. In the carmesh project (http://carmesh.eu) we take the view that the phone will be the hub which will facilitate service delivery and the car interface will be realized using an open source platform: the car will provide UI components to the app running on the mobile device as well as information coming from the car. In this talk, we focus on the technologies we are using to implement demonstrators of these services. Specifically, we are working with Tizen IVI as the automotive platform and the SmartDeviceLink mobile-car interaction protocol and implementing basic applications which integrate with standar

Automotive Supply Chains with Built-In License Compliance: How a Vision Can Become Reality - Claus-Peter Wiedemann, BearingPoint and Phil Odence, Black Duck Software
FOSS and especially Linux is present at virtually all stages of the Automotive supply chain and companies invest considerable efforts into determining and fulfilling the license obligations required for making deliveries license compliant. To make this process efficient, they usually take for granted the license compliance information provided by suppliers without verifying its completeness or correctness. But the believe in this widespread, good-faith approach was recently destroyed by a German court of law. As a consequence, established processes have to change. This presentation shows how SPDX, combined with standardized FOSS Management activities can create a network of trusted suppliers where compliance information is jointly managed, making it reliable and seamlessly travel with the code. This approach can greatly reduce the FOSS Management effort for all network participants.

Integrating NFC Into Your Head Unit - Samuel Ortiz, Intel
With NFC steadily making its way into upstream Linux and now being a
GENIVI abstract component, it's probably the right time to look at what
are the benefit of integrating NFC into a Linux based IVI system, and
what it takes to do so.

After looking at a few interesting use case ranging from automated
Bluetooth pairing and WiFi association, to using your NFC handset as your
key car, we will map them to actual software stacks, features and
hardware requirements.

The next part of our presentation will describe how to implement those
use cases by combining open source and upstream components like BlueZ,
ConnMan and neard. Finally we will go through a live step by step integration
of ConnMan, wpa_supplicant and neard for implementing the WiFi association
through NFC use case.

Xen on ARM: Virtualization for the Automotive Industry - Stefano Stabellini, Citrix
During the last few months of 2011 the Xen Community started an effort to port Xen to ARMv7 with virtualization extensions, using the Cortex A15 processor as reference platform.

The new Xen port is exploiting this set of hardware capabilities to run guest VMs in the most efficient way possible while keeping the ARM specific changes to the hypervisor and the Linux kernel to a minimum. Developing the new port we took the chance to remove legacy concepts like PV or HVM guests and only support a single kind of guests that is comparable to "PVH" in the Xen X86 world.

Linux 3.7 was the first kernel release to run on Xen on ARM as Dom0 and DomU. Xen 4.3, out in July 2013, is the first hypervisor release to support ARMv7 with virtualization extensions and ARMv8.

This talk will explain why ARM virtualization is set to be increasingly relevant for the automotive industry in the coming years.  We will go on to describe how Xen exploits the strengths of the hardware to meet the requirements of the industry.  We will illustrate the early design choices and we will evaluate whether they were proven successful or a failure.

Sharing the GPU in Virtualized Environments - Olaf Schmidt, OpenSynergy
We will give a brief outlook on the next steps regarding the sharing of the GPU and hardware virtualization. We will propose a software architecture that uses virtualization with a hypervisor and that is already implemented and available. The hypervisor creates isolated software partitions with integrated operating systems like Linux. This allows consumer electronics software to be reused in the vehicle and securely and safely connected to the in-vehicle network. One of the benefits of hardware virtualization is that the processors can be used more efficiently: Several partitions on the virtualized hardware can access one core, or, vice versa, one partition can tap into the computing power of several cores. What kind of opportunities presents themselves when approaching GPU virtualization? We intend to explain the chances while responsibly dealing with the related challenges.

LXCBENCH: Understanding the Capabilities of Linux Containers in IVI Applications Through Benchmarking - Gianpaolo Macario, Mentor Graphics
With the current trends of multi-core System-on-a-Chips it becomes more appealing to In-Vehicle Infotainment system designers to consolidate into the same SoC functions that were previously deployed on separate ECUs.

Linux Containers (LXC) are increasingly getting attention from IVI system architects as a way of partitioning the software architecture of an IVI system into domains - by sharing the Linux kernel and relying on specific kernel features to provide separation and allocation of resources to containers.

The LXCBENCH Open Source Project, proposed by the Politecnico di Torino, has been launched and supported by the GENIVI Alliance in order to spread knowledge about Linux Containers and to develop tools to measure performance impacts.

Audio Management in Tizen IVI - Jaska Uimonen, Intel Corporation
From audio management perspective the In-Vehicle-Infotainment (IVI) platforms are complex featuring multiple simultaneous users in different entertainment zones with a possible large number of connected audio outputs. The new generation of IVI platforms often choose PulseAudio as their audio server. On the other hand the legacy IVI systems audio model is usually some form of audio switching matrix where sources can be freely routed to any number of sinks. This model does not map naturally to the Pulseaudio model. In this presentation Jaska Uimonen will explain how these issues are tackled in Tizen IVI stack. The solution will consist of new logical model for audio inputs and outputs in Pulseaudio and example algorithms for routing and volume control.

Murphy Resource Policy Engine - Janos Kovacs, Intel Corporation
Murphy is new open source component for making and enforcing complex policy decisions. Murphy is designed to handle multiple policy domains such as audio, video and UI. An example for complex multi-domain policy decision is to stop video playback on the front seat display when the car is moving, while video playbacks should continue on the backseat.

Murphy is destined for embeded systems, where the interaction capabilities are limited, yet quick response is expected to certain events. A good examples for the embedded systems where Murphy can be used are mobile phones, vehicle infotainment systems and smart televisions.

In this first public presentation about Murphy Janos Kovacs will share the concepts and details of the component which is already in use in Tizen IVI stack.

PIM - It's all About the Contacts - Patrick Ohly, Intel GmbH
Integrating contact PIM data into IVI has several unique challenges. The data must be available almost instantly after turning on the system. Users expect good integration with their mobile phones and web services. A solution must be tuned for the specific needs of the UI and at the same time flexible enough to be used in different models and car generations.

In this talk, Patrick Ohly will give an overview of different open source PIM storages and then present the solution chosen and enhanced for Tizen IVI over the last year: Evolution Data Servers stores contacts in sqlite, supporting direct reading for best performance. SyncEvolution caches phone address books using Bluetooth and PBAP. It synchronizes with cloud services via CardDAV, ActiveSync, or SyncML. folks provides a flexible unified address book.

The entire stack is available as open source and developed in public.

The 'Telematics Horizon': Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) Networking - Alison Chaiken, Mentor Graphics Embedded Software Division
V2X enables autonomy but offers immediate benefit. Recent tests are the basis for a planned Rotterdam-Vienna corridor and pending U.S. regulation. While simTD employed 120 special cars, SafetyPilot relies on after-market units in 3000 vehicles. Regulators (except Japan) have agreed on 5.9 GHz spectrum and 802.11p protocol. How will WiFi-based V2X complement LTE and satellite? Europe plans source-address transmission for tolling, while U.S. envisions anonymous broadcasts. Discussions are underway about security and privacy via PKE and location-based extensions to DNS. Linux tools for remote configuration, logging and updates now apply to fleets. Many manufacturers sell Linux-based in-vehicle and road-side radios. Higher-level Dedicated Short Range Communication, unlike usual WiFi, uses a more efficient protocol than IPV6 for briefer transmissions. What is the state of Linux support?
